Marine ich (ick) is one of the most common diseases found in industry saltwater aquariums. Ick saltwater or Cryptocaryon irritans, is a protozoan parasite that attaches to the gills and skin of fish. Ich is present in almost all environments at all times low. Healthy fish with good immune systems can effectively combat parasites with little or no visual detection. Ich is a stress-induced disease. Once a fish is stressed, the parasite multiplies and then takes over the immune system of fish Underlining not strong enough to fight it. Signs of ich can be many. The obvious sign is the white spots on the skin that look like grains of salt. This should not be confused with Amyloodinium or velvet, which looks like a fine white powder in fish. Other signs may include loss of appetite, flashing, lethargy or heavy breathing.
As stated earlier, Ich is a stress-induced disease. Any healthy fish with a strong immune system can fight Ich without full-blown infection. What is important in treating Ich is to find out what the stressor is. Stressors can be anything from aggression, temperature changes, diet, period lighting, water quality and the introduction of new fish.
Mild stability in a saltwater tank is very important. There should never be more than a fluctuation of 2 degrees is a 24-hour period. Buy the best thermometer you can afford. A digital thermometer record is better, as this will help you determine the lowest and the highest temperature. Many hobbiests fail in this part and buy cheap glass thermometer and never know they have a problem.
Aggression is also at the top. When selecting fish should always investigate compatibility. Know your fish are compatible and not trying to kill each other, will have a lasting effect on your tank. Lighting period in a tank should be fairly obvious. You will be amazed while the number of people I've talked to who will cycle lights on and off 2 or 3 times a day. This is a big no no. Messing with the lunar cycle will be challenging highlight their fish. 4-8 hours is ideal for any aquarium. Reef tanks have proven to be just as healthy with 4 hours of light and 8 hours per day. Find out the best time to have the lights on working with your work schedule. Just make sure you turn on and off only once per day.
Diet is a whole other topic. Here we will only make the statement that the investigation of each fish's diet is very beneficial. You may be able to maintain a living in the brine yellow tang, but that does not mean it will be healthy and have a good immune system. Water quality is another topic for another day, but again, the optimal conditions of water will do wonders in maintaining a healthy tank. Also adding a new way fish can be considered as a stress factor. Put a new fish in the tank already has a ich outbreak and are stressed ich allow to reproduce quickly in your tank. The rapid reproduction of ich can cause stress on existing fish as they now have more ich to treat and control.
There are many treatments out there for Saltwater Ich. However, there are very few that are considered friendly "reef" and those are questionable. I would attack this from more of a holistic point of view. While copper, Maracyn, Ick Cure, and have proven effective in treating saltwater Ich, there are many side effects that ultimately emphasize the fish more than the Ich own. As it can not dispense these in a reef aquarium, which should catch the fish and configuring a hospital tank to treat the fish in question. This alone can be very stressful. A lot of today Ich strains have become resistant to these drugs too.
